FAQ - File Preparation and Transfer

What file formats do you accept?

We prefer EPS and TIFF files for images. We can also accept JPEGs and PDFs. We discourage the use of JPEGs because most of the time they cause quality issues.

What types of media can I use to send you my files?

You can send us your files on a CD-Rom, floppy disk, Zip disc or Jaz disc if you are not sending the files electronically.

How much of a bleed do I need to build into my files?

Please include a 1/8" bleed around all four sides of the page layout for bleeds, where applicable.

Should I compress my files before sending them?

You do not need to compress files that you upload or e-mail to us as long as they do not exceed 5 MB. For larger files using File Transfer Protocol (FTP), we do recommend using compression software prior to sending the files to speed up the transfer process.

Do I need to use any special kind of naming system for the files I send you?

No, we will use whatever file names you designate for the job. However, we do recommend that you use a similar name for all files associated with one job, such as a layout file, image files and font files (for example, MyJob Layout, MyJob Image1, MyJob Image2, MyJob Screen Fonts, MyJob Print Fonts).

Can I use images that I've taken using a digital camera?

Images you take with a digital camera are usually recreated in JPEG format. While JPEG looks good on a monitor, it usually loses some resolution and quality when used for printing. For high-quality images, we recommend using EPS or TIFF files.

Can I use images I've downloaded from the Internet?

When you download images from the Internet, some of the image and resolution is left out of the picture to speed up the transfer. As a result, these images tend to look ragged and out-of-focus when used in print. Therefore, we do not recommend images derived from the Internet for print pieces.

Can I use black and white photography on a four-color piece?

Yes.

What resolution should I use for graphics and text files?

We strongly recommend producing all your image files at 300 dpi and all text files at 400 dpi.

Do I need to supply you with font files?

Yes. To be sure we have an exact match to the type you want, we ask you to supply us with the fonts. Be sure to send us both the screen and printer fonts.

Can I e-mail you my files?

Yes. We'll send you an electronic confirmation upon receipt of your order. Simply follow the instructions you are given when placing your order.

Do I need to set up business card files for imposition?

No. Just prepare one file for each person who will receive the business cards. We'll take care of imposition if it is needed.

Do you print envelopes with bleeds?

No, not as part of our standard product offerings. However, we can print envelopes with bleeds as a Custom order. Simply go to the Custom page and fill out the request for a Custom quote.

Can I have my graphic designer send my files separate from my placing the order?

Yes. You'll receive an electronic confirmation of your order after submission. The confirmation includes your job number as well as instructions for all electronic transfer options. Simply share this information with your graphic designer so that he or she can follow the instructions.
